What's happening: the 2023-2026 Vanuatu access wind-down
Vanuatu was historically pitched on a "95 to 119 country visa-free list." That figure traces back to 2022 data. In February 2023 the UK ended its electronic travel authority and 90-day visa-free for Vanuatu. In June 2024 the EU formally suspended Vanuatu Schengen visa-free access. Combined, those two changes covered 30+ destinations.
The pattern continues into 2026. Singapore added an "online pre-clearance" step in 2024 — visa-free in name, more screening in practice. Hong Kong added a "special review channel" in 2025 for select CBI passports. Dubai changed several formerly visa-free arrangements to "visa on arrival" with associated fees.
The cross-border e-commerce founder who picked the wrong tool
April. A cross-border e-commerce founder from Shenzhen came to my LA living room. He travels Singapore, Dubai, Bangkok regularly for business. He wanted a "backup travel passport." His agent had pitched Vanuatu. "95 countries, cheapest, fastest."
I asked him to pull up his last 12 months of passport entry stamps:
- Singapore: 6 trips. Vanuatu visa-free in name, but in practice requires online pre-clearance with stricter scrutiny than his Chinese passport
- Dubai: 4 trips. Vanuatu was originally 30-day visa-free, since 2025 reclassified as visa-on-arrival at $80 per entry
- Bangkok: 3 trips. Vanuatu 30-day visa-free still works
- Hong Kong: 2 trips. Vanuatu 14-day visa-free in name, since 2025 some CBI clients run through a special review channel
- Europe: 4 trips. Vanuatu Schengen suspended in 2024, no longer usable
The math: of his five most-frequent destinations in 12 months, three are now degraded for a Vanuatu passport holder. I told him: in your travel-passport use case, Vanuatu is the wrong tool. You need Schengen plus UK plus Southeast Asia coverage. That's Saint Kitts.
Why I keep saying Vanuatu is not a travel passport in 2026
I've watched this product erode since 2023. The original sales pitch — "95 countries, including Schengen and UK, $130K, 4 months" — has been collapsing piece by piece. What's left is speed and remote processing, not travel reach. So when a client comes in saying "I want a backup travel passport," I tell them Vanuatu is not it. If they say "I need a backup identity in 6 months for non-travel reasons," Vanuatu is fine. The framing has to be honest.
Vanuatu visa-free reality, by region, as of May 2026
| Region | 2022 marketing | 2026 reality |
|---|---|---|
| Schengen Europe (27) | Visa-free 90 days | Suspended (June 2024) |
| UK + Northern Ireland | Visa-free 6 months | Canceled (February 2023) |
| Singapore | Visa-free 30 days | Visa-free in name + pre-clearance screening |
| Hong Kong | Visa-free 14 days | Visa-free in name + special review for some clients |
| Dubai | Visa-free 30 days | Visa on arrival, $80 |
| Thailand / Malaysia | Visa-free 30 days | Still visa-free |
| Russia / Turkey | Visa-free | Still visa-free |
| Most Caribbean / Pacific small states | Visa-free | Still visa-free (low actual travel demand) |
What Vanuatu actually delivers in 2026 for travel
- Stable visa-free access to parts of Southeast Asia (Thailand, Malaysia)
- Visa-free access to Russia and Turkey
- Pacific island reciprocal access (low real-world utility)
What's been degraded
- Schengen 27 (suspended 2024) — the core value of a "travel passport"
- UK (canceled 2023)
- Singapore and Hong Kong (visa-free in name, screening in practice)
- Dubai (now $80 visa on arrival)
Three things 90% of agents won't tell you
- The "95 countries" figure is 2022 data. By 2026 the real usable count is 40 to 50, a 50%+ shrinkage
- "Visa-free" and "visa-free in practice" are not the same thing. Visa-free in name plus heavy pre-clearance equals friction
- Vanuatu's true 2026 positioning is emergency Plan B, not travel passport. Wrong use case equals wrong fit
Client snapshot (anonymized, recent file)
Cross-border e-commerce founder from Shenzhen. Frequent traveler to Singapore, Dubai, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Europe. Walked in for Vanuatu sold on "95 countries." Came to my LA home in April.
[Ken's call] He needs a travel passport. Vanuatu is the wrong fit. Three of his top five destinations are degraded for Vanuatu. I redirected him to Saint Kitts: Schengen yes, UK 180 days yes, full Southeast Asia coverage. Not the most expensive, not the cheapest, only the most appropriate. For travel, Vanuatu doesn't fit. Saint Kitts does.
FAQ
Q: Can a Vanuatu passport still get me into Europe in 2026?
A: Not visa-free. As of May 2026, the EU has suspended Vanuatu Schengen visa-free since June 2024. Travel to Schengen requires applying for a Schengen visa, the same way a Chinese passport holder would.
Q: Is Vanuatu still visa-free for Singapore?
A: Visa-free in name (30 days), but since 2024 it requires online "electronic travel pre-clearance," with screening stricter than for Chinese passport holders. Some applications get supplementary documentation requests. It's not as smooth as the marketing suggests.
Q: So what is Vanuatu actually useful for in 2026?
A: Three things: a second identity in 6 months for backup, $130K low entry, fully remote processing. Travel reach isn't its strength anymore. If your core need is travel — go Saint Kitts.
Q: I already hold a Vanuatu passport. Is it worth keeping?
A: Yes, with adjusted expectations. Existing Vanuatu holders should treat the passport as a backup identity rather than a travel document. Use it for parts of Southeast Asia and Russia/Turkey where access is still clean. For Europe and the UK, plan around regular visa applications. I have several existing Vanuatu clients I helped layer Saint Kitts on top in 2024-2025 once it became clear the visa-free list was shrinking permanently. The two passports together give complete coverage.
Q: Will Vanuatu's visa-free list keep shrinking?
A: I don't think it gets worse from here in the near term, but I also don't expect EU or UK reinstatement. The 40-50 country range looks like the new floor through at least 2027.
